Benefits of Sauerkraut

Sauerkraut jars

Finished Sauerkraut jars

Coming from a German background, sauerkraut is something pretty familiar to me. But unfortunately it is not something that has been a steady part of my diet throughout my whole life. Recently I’ve begun to shift that and am beginning to include more of it in my diet. Sauerkraut is filled with lactic acid bacteria, which are great for our gastrointestinal health!

When we think of good bacteria, the first thing that usually comes to mind is yogurt. But as someone who doesn’t do well with dairy, I’ve realized that sauerkraut is a wonderful way to get beneficial bacteria that my gut needs. Fermented foods, such as sauerkraut, have been a part of the human diet for centuries. These good bacteria boost our immune system by increasing the amount of antibodies that help fight off bad bugs such as E-coli, salmonella, and candida. In addition they’re often beneficial for people with diseases like IBS. Plus sauerkraut is filled with lots of minerals and vitamins that our bodies need.

Awesome! My mother is German too and as a matter of fact I have about 6 jars of freshly made raw sauerkraut sitting in the fridge 😉 Guten Appetit!
